Extensive show of works by the three iconographic underground bands

The book project "M_Dokumente" focuses on the explicitly female perspective of the all-female bands Mania D., Malaria! and Matador on the West Berlin music and art scene from the late 1970s on.

The three bands around Bartel, Köster and Gut played concerts, released records and toured around the world in different formations from 1979 on. What stood out and was new was the self-determined appearance of the musicians, which was reflected in their music and lyrics as well as in their unique style and the genre-crossing approach of "more art in the music, more music in the art". To this day, the three M_Bands are considered visionary, they shaped a new image of women in pop culture and are pioneers and role models for important and necessary emancipatory movements in the music industry.

Das Buchprojekt »M_Dokumente« nimmt die explizit weibliche Sichtweise der All Female Bands Mania D., Malaria! und Matador auf die Westberliner Musik- und Kunstszene ab den späten 1970er-Jahren in den Fokus.

Die drei Bands um Bartel, Köster und Gut spielten ab 1979 in unterschiedlicher Zusammensetzung Konzerte, veröffentlichten Platten und tourten um die ganze Welt. Herausstechend und neu war das selbstbestimmte Auftreten der Musikerinnen, das sich sowohl in der Musik und den Texten als auch in ihrem einzigartigen Stil und dem genreübergreifenden Ansatz »Mehr Kunst in die Musik, mehr Musik in die Kunst« wiederfand. Bis heute gelten die drei M_Bands als visionär, sie prägten ein neues Frauenbild in der Popkultur und sind Vorreiterinnen und Vorbild für wichtige und notwendige emanzipatorische Bewegungen in der Musikbranche.

»Trotzdem hört man heute, wenn man in dichter Folge M_Platten auflegt, so etwas wie ein Werk (nicht so sehr ein Genre), eines, das man nicht unbedingt einer einzelnen Person zuordnen kann, sondern eher einem Geist – in jedem Sinne des Wortes.
